Today the report cards were given to the students. Please make sure to return the report cards to school.
This week we are focusing on practice tests for the NJ ASK. The testing will begin for third grade on Monday, May 10, 2010.
We are reading an article on Tornadoes - and will continue to work with/on tornadoes for the rest of the week.
The spelling words this week are the same as last week. The focus is on adjectives that compare and the test will be this Friday, April 30th.
In math we are reviewing multiplication, division, and multiples of ten.
We are beginning our unit on Earth Materials in science.
In social studies we are continuing our unit communities.

I apologize for the gap in new postings.
In Literacy, our students will focus this week on Author's Purpose - why do authors write what they do?
- To Entertain
- To Inform
- To Persuade
- To Give Directions
We will accomplish this task by taking a look at everything we read and asking ourselves why the author wrote this piece and finding information in the reading that can validate our reasons.
We are working with adjectives that compare and also working on writing rhyming poems this week.
Fractions are still the name of the game during math. We will have a test on Thursday on Fractions.
In Social Studies we will begin our unit on Communities Over Time. The students will have the opportunity to read informational text and asnwer questions using our new text books.
We will begin our unit on Earth Materials in Science this week.

I hope we all had a fun and safe break.
Today the students got right to work with new spelling and vocabulary words.
We will be reading a folktale about mosquitoes and comparing it to previous folktales read in class.
In math we have started our unit on fractions - we will work diligently to grasp the concept. Please wok at home with the students.
Also, continue to practice with the students the multiplication/ division facts.
In Social Studies we will review "The Community" - we just received text books and the students have really taken to the text and pictures.
In Science we are continuing our unit on the rain forest.

We are still working with multiplication and division in math - the students are learning fact extensions.

I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day Weekend and enjoyed the snow.
This week will be a continuation of last week - since we were only in school two days.
The students will receive the same words as last week which are posted in the post below.
We are still continuing our unit on geometry in math, along with reviewing for the NJASK with reading and interpreting a graph practice.
In social studies we are writing how we are going to make our dreams come true, relating it to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream for equality.
In science we are still focusing on the human body with emphasis on bones.

It's Been Too Long
I hope everyone is doing well.
Today the students will be writing, writing, writing, and reading. We will be reading an informational text and writing about what we have read. The students began reading their books last week and began to plan their writing. Please ask your students what they are reading/writing about.
We will review singular and plural possessive nouns and introduce prefixes.
In math we will continue our unit on place value and naming big numbers. This unit also covers decimals which we will begin by the middle of the week - please practice with your student saying the names of big numbers and that of decimals as well.
In social studies we are studying cliff dwellings of the Anasazi - a Native American tribe. We will be constructing cliff dwellings and will be complete by the end of this week.
Science will focus on weighing six objects that are close in weight and putting them in order from least to greatest using binary symbols.
The students receive a Reading Log every Monday - I am only receive a few back, please make sure that your student completes the reading log. The students should be reading at least 20 minutes every night.
